We are ridgetop pines in the first image, high above the tide of winter fog sweeping down the Whanganui River trench. It is a bright and sunny day. We feel exhilarated, free. Then the sky darkens, the fog thickens and we watch with increasing unease as the encroaching grey stands attack an old pine on the river flat opposite. It breaks free momentarily but only an agile little sow-thistle escapes. The forces of darkness finally triumph as the last pine is overwhelmed.

This apocalyptic sequence was created by reversing the sequence of ealy morning images. Imaginative sequencing and creative cropping.

Highly commended.
